Freeport, Maine, approximately two and a half hours from Boston, is a fabulous family-friendly road trip for a weekend away. The drive is relatively easy – just head north on 95 to 295, and you’re there.
Most famous as the headquarters of LL Bean, Freeport has a lot of things to offer for families, especially those who enjoy the outdoors. Like the rest of Maine, it’s absolutely beautiful and has a nice, relaxed vibe that’s perfect for families. If you are thinking of visiting, here are some of the best things to do in Freeport Maine with kids.
We’ve been to Freeport, Maine a number of times, including a complimentary trip with the Hilton Garden Inn. We’ve also taken the Amtrak Downeaster to Portland Maine at no cost. All opinions are my own.

Things to Do In Freeport, Maine With Kids
Freeport Maine Outlets
Of course, you absolutely have to head to the flagship store of LL Bean, right in the center of Freeport. It’s so much more than a store, also offering a giant fish tank and a fun-filled kids’ section. It’s huge and is lots of fun for the whole family.
Even if you aren’t shopping, you are likely to spend lots of time there. Before heading into the store, you’ll want to pose for pictures in front of the iconic large Bean Boot outside the store.
When we visited right after Christmas last year, there were loads of family events around the store, including visits with Santa. In addition to the flagship LL Bean store, you’ll also find other LL Bean stores in Freeport, Maine, including the Home store and the outlet store.
But, you won’t just find LL Bean in downtown Freeport. There are some shops and small restaurants. Among the smaller shops are some big-name outlets, including Coach, Old Navy, Talbot’s, and Brook’s Brothers.
It’s best to just park in one spot and walk since most of the shops are all in one area. We’ve found some great deals at the Freeport Outlets, especially right after Christmas. You’re likely to find great deals any time of year.
Bradbury Mountain State Park
Located in nearby Pownal, Maine is Bradbury Mountain State Park. It offers hiking and mountain biking trails in the summer, and snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the winter. Snowshoe rentals are available if you don’t have your own.
The state park is open year-round, but facilities are not open in the off-season. Parking fees, however, are charged year-round.
Wolfe’s Neck Farm
During our fall visit to Freeport, we were able to attend a Fall Festival at the nearby Wolfe’s Neck Farm, where the kids loved seeing the animals, taking a hay ride, and picking and decorating pumpkins. The farm offers a variety of family-friendly events throughout the year.
We absolutely loved the fall festival and would consider traveling up to Freeport just for that! Take a look at the website to see what events are occurring during your visit.
On a standard, nonfestival weekend, Wolfe’s Neck Farm still has plenty to offer. Activities include bicycling, kayaking, and canoeing (rentals are available). They also offer camping and a farm store.
Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary
This bird sanctuary, operated by the Maine Audubon, is about one mile from downtown Freeport. It offers trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, as well as regular family programs on 145 acres. See their website for more specific programming details.
Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park
This picturesque state park is an ideal spot for birding. On the Casco Bay Trail, you can see a number of different birds including ospreys. Wolfe’s Neck Woods state park also offers various nature walks and educational events where you can learn more about the birds who inhabit the area.
Activities also include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.
Drive to Portland, Maine
Portland, Maine, a popular family vacation destination, is located about 20 minutes from Freeport. It’s easy to stay in Freeport and visit Portland, or vice versa.
In Portland, you’ll find several family-friendly activities, including museums and boat tours, as well as delicious restaurants and fun shops. While Portland Maine is very popular in the summer months, I also really like visiting in the winter when it’s less crowded.
Freeport Maine Restaurants
Wicked Whoopies – You’ll want to stop at this little shop in Downtown Freeport, which offers the popular Maine dessert. This stop is located right near LL Bean, so it’s easy to visit for a quick snack.
Gritty McDuff’s – this brewpub has great food and a vibrant atmosphere.
Antonia’s Pizzeria – this Greek pizzeria offers pizza, burgers, sandwiches, and more. It’s located right near the center of town.
There are lots of other restaurants in the area in addition to these, so you’ll find something appropriate for your family during your Freeport Maine family vacation.
Where to Stay
One of our trips was sponsored by the Hilton Garden Inn, which is really a nice place for families to stay. While the rooms are relatively standard, there are refrigerators and microwaves in each room.
There’s also an indoor pool, and free WiFi in every room. The hotel is spotless and new, and if the weather is nice, you can walk to the shops and restaurants. It’s a great moderately priced place for families.
You can see pricing options and book here.
You can also search this map to see a variety of lodging options near popular attractions.
