Once believed to be the “end of the world”, Sagres, Portugal is a quaint village located in the Algarve region of Portugal. Approximately a three-hour drive from Lisbon, Sagres is home to a stunning coastline and beautiful beaches. During my recent visit to Portugal with Martinhal Resorts, we spent a night at the Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort. It’s a great place for the entire family – with activities that adults and kids of all ages can enjoy.

Review of the Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort Hotel in Sagres Portugal
The Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort is the original Martinhal resort and is located along the Algarve coast in Portugal. This five-star family resort opened in 2010 within a National Park, and the beautiful surroundings are a big part of the resort’s charm. It’s the type of resort where families can enjoy individual activities if they choose, but can also spend the whole vacation together.
The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, and all of the families we saw really seemed to be enjoying their stay. Like the Martinhal resort in Cascais, the Martinhal Sagres caters to families, and children are welcome throughout the resort. Instead of a resort that welcomes families, this resort was very clearly built with families and children in mind.
The Family Amenities at the Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort
I was so impressed with all of the family amenities at the resort. The highlight is the Village Square, which is where you’ll find the kids’ clubs including the creche (a nursery). Children are permitted at the kids’ clubs from age 6 months, and it’s recommended that families reserve in advance.
Morning and afternoon sessions are offered, and an additional fee applies. Kids are separated by age, and there are a number of programs offered each day. A schedule is provided so families can decide which programs would work best for their kids.
In the Village Square, you’ll also find the M Bar (which has a little “kids’ bar” area), Os Gambazinos (the Italian restaurant), a small market, a kids’ play area with trampolines and a bounce house, a real estate office, and the bike rental shop.
For those adventurous families, bike rentals and bike tours are offered. Helmets are included with a rental, and families can also choose to add a GPS device to guide them on their bike ride. The rental shop has a variety of products including bike trailers, mountain bikes, and balance bikes. Kids can also choose to take their bikes to one of the two “pump tracks” for a little adventure.
Family concierges are available to help families get anything they may need during their stay, including high chairs, bottle warmers, and baby gates. The restaurants were always filled with children, and each has a special supervised kids’ corner where children can play while their parents finish their meals.
The Activities at the Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort
As a beach resort, there are lots of family activities offered on the beach at the Martinhal Watersports Centre, including stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, and kayaking. There are also a number of activities taking place throughout the resort, like a baby disco party, mocktail creation, and art creation. Families receive a schedule of activities when checking in.
Tennis and PADEL courts, football (soccer) sessions and tournaments, other sports fields, and a fitness room are also offered at the resort. There’s also a full-service spa on the property.
While the resort is located right on the beautiful Portuguese beach, there are also five swimming pools on the property. These include the Pool Hangout (right above the beach) and the Club 98 Sports Centre pool (for lap swimming).
Other activities and amenities include the Blue Room game room, petanque (similar to bocce), a fitness trail, and much more.
The Rooms at the Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort
The Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort almost appears to be multiple resorts in one. The hotel section of the resort has 37 rooms, including 2 duplex suites. Room amenities include free WiFi, towel warmers, cable television, balconies/patios, and Voya toiletries.
In addition to the hotel rooms, there are small “houses” within the Martinhal Village, including Ocean Houses, Bay Houses, Garden Houses, and Pinewoods. These all offer a kitchen, washer/dryer, and multiple bedrooms. Some have private pools. The resort also has 45 luxury villas.
All of the details for each of the lodging types are available on their website. It’s worth going through the various options to figure out what is the best room type for your family and your vacation plans. I was in one of the hotel rooms during my stay, and I loved the airy decor and the beautiful view – but some of the rooms offer more space for a family.
Restaurants at the Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort
While families in the villages or villas can prepare their own meals, there are also numerous family-friendly restaurants on the property. Os Gambozinos is a pizza and pasta restaurant located in the village. For seafood lovers, As Dunas offers fresh seafood with gorgeous views of the Atlantic Ocean.
O Terraço, located in the main building, serves traditional Portuguese cuisine for breakfast and dinner. We dined at all three restaurants, and the meals were all fantastic. I could easier have eaten all of my meals at those three restaurants. When traveling with a family, it’s sometimes easier to stay at the hotel, so it’s nice to have all of these delicious options right there.
The Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort is such a relaxing, fun place for a family to visit. It would be great to combine a visit to the Algarve with stays in Cascais and Lisbon. To learn more, visit their website.

While the Faro airport is the closest, the Lisbon airport will have more flight options. We took a private car service between the two locations, although trains are also an option.
You could definitely stay for a long beach vacation. I’d recommend combining a trip there with one to Lisbon and perhaps Porto.
