The Best Family Resorts: New England Edition
Sea Crest Beach Hotel, Falmouth, MA
While its name would indicate that it is a “hotel”, the Sea Crest Beach Hotel is one the best New England beach resorts that I’ve experienced. It features a beautiful outdoor pool, an indoor pool, a spa, and a delicious, scenic restaurant.
In addition, it’s located right on Old Silver Beach in Falmouth and is the perfect location for a beach vacation. Umbrellas and beach chairs are offered for guests of the resort, and you can walk down to the beach right from your hotel room.
While the Sea Crest is perfect for a summer family vacation, you may also consider it in early fall. We’ve been twice in mid-September, and have loved it. The Cape Cod crowds have left, but the weather and water temperature are still warm. If you don’t want to visit the beach every day, the indoor pool is nice as well. My kids usually enjoy swimming after dinner.
There are a variety of room types at the Sea Crest. While some are larger and have better views than others, we generally don’t spend too much time in the room. So you may be able to save money on the room type.
You can book the Sea Crest here.
Ocean Edge Resort, Brewster, MA
Also located on Cape Cod, Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster offers a number of fun family amenities. Families have their choice of lodging options, including the Mansion at Ocean Edge and the Villages at Ocean Edge.
Amenities (some with an additional fee) include bike rentals, the private Bay Pines Beach (for Mansion guests only), three outdoor pools, two indoor pools, eleven tennis courts, a fitness center, three restaurants, and saunas and whirlpools. During school vacations, the resort offers special kids’ programming and camps.
Think about what amenities you are looking for and what type of experience you want to have. If you want to access the private beach, you’ll definitely want to stay in one of the Mansion rooms. Otherwise, there are loads of great Cape Cod beaches in the area that you can visit.
Book a stay at Ocean Edge here (Mansion side, Villages side).
The White Elephant, Nantucket, MA
Located in downtown Nantucket, the luxurious and family-friendly White Elephant in Nantucket consists of two separate concepts – the hotel and the White Elephant Village. The village is made up of rooms and suites at the Inn at White Elephant Village, and one-, two-, and three-bedroom residents.
Families may prefer staying in one of the residences because you’ll have more space to spread out. The ferry terminals, shops, restaurants, and Children’s Beach are just a quick walk from the White Elephant.
When visiting Nantucket, you’ll need to take a ferry to get there (or you can fly). Make those reservations in advance, because the ferries do fill up, especially in the busy summer months. If you are staying at the White Elephant, you won’t necessarily need a car. You can walk to most places.

Great Wolf Lodge New England, Fitchburg, MA
Several years ago, the Great Wolf Lodge brought their popular chain of resorts with indoor waterparks to New England. The Great Wolf Lodge New England offers an arcade, several restaurants, a large water park (split into two different areas), a kids’ spa, an indoor ropes course, bowling, and so much more.
My kids always enjoy a visit to the Great Wolf Lodge resorts, and it’s a great place to visit during the cooler weather. Remember that you need to be a guest at the resort to enjoy the waterpark, so it isn’t as crowded as you may expect.
Most families like to stay one or two nights. You’ll get access to the water park on both your check-in day and your check-out day.

Ocean House Watch Hill, Westerly, RI
The Ocean House Watch Hill in Westerly, RI, is a luxurious Relais and Chateaux property. Kid-friendly amenities include access to a private beach (complete with beach butlers), a spa, a salon, complimentary afternoon refreshments, free WiFi, use of the resort’s cars in town, and an indoor lap pool
Kids can also get a welcome amenity (for kids aged 12 and younger), use of children’s bathrobes, and baby/kids’ toiletries. Restaurants on the property have children’s menus, so you’ll feel comfortable dining on the property.

Migis Lodge, Sebago Lake, ME
Migis Lodge, located on Sebago Lake, Maine, is a luxurious and rustic all-inclusive family resort. It’s a good, old-fashioned type of resort where families can enjoy spending time together in nature. Amenities and activities include a kids’ club, water sports, tennis, a sauna, and a fitness center.
My kids really loved spending some time in the kids’ club, and even enjoyed dinner with the other kids while my husband and I dined alone. One of our favorite parts of the day was the delicious lunch cookout, which included watermelon, lobster claws, and hot dogs.
Migis Lodge is only open in season and books up in advance. Many families choose to stay there the same week year after year, so you’ll want to make your reservation as soon as you know you want to stay there.

The Lodge at Spruce Creek, Stowe, Vermont
The Lodge at Spruce Creek, a luxurious New England family resort in Stowe Vermont, offers family fun in both the summer and the winter. In the winter, you can enjoy skiing and other winter sports at the Stowe Mountain Resort.
If you’d prefer to stay on the property, the lodge also boasts a beautiful outdoor pool, deluxe accommodations, a spa, and much more. Note that this resort was previously known as the Stowe Mountain Lodge.
If you aren’t familiar with Stowe, it’s a wonderfully quirky town with great restaurants and shops. On the way there, you may pass through Waterbury, Vermont, where you can get a factory tour of Ben and Jerry’s. It’s one of our favorite things to do in Vermont.

Smugglers’ Notch, Vermont
Smugglers’ Notch is known as one of the best New England ski resorts, but it’s so much more than that. In the summer, families can enjoy world-class camps, a variety of pools with waterslides, a FunZone, tennis, and many more programs and activities. It’s definitely one of the best resorts in New England.
We always enjoy our Smuggs summer vacations because the kids love going to camp during the day, while we enjoy some free time before coming together in the evening.
However, if you do enjoy skiing, Smugglers’ Notch is definitely a great New England family resort. There are fabulous ski programs for children, including a ski and ride school. If you’ve got kids who are too young to ski (aged 6 weeks to 3 years), the resort offers the Treasures child care center.

The Mountain Club on Loon, Lincoln, NH
I have loved staying at the Mountain Club on Loon since I was a kid. Located right on Loon Mountain, it’s a great place to stay for both a summer and winter family vacation. The resort features a full-service fitness center, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, a bar, a restaurant, and a spa. Families can book a studio room (with a kitchen) connected to a bedroom, so you’ll have plenty of space to spread out.
Loon Mountain offers a number of activities for families in both the summer and winter. In the summer, you’ll find the Aerial Forest Adventure Park and activities like zip-lining, disc golf, biking, a climbing wall, and a skyride. In the winter, there’s skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and a zipline.

Meadowmere Resort in Ogunquit, Maine
I recently had the opportunity to visit the Meadowmere Resort, located in beautiful Ogunquit on the coast of Maine. The Meadowmere is within walking distance of the popular attractions in Ogunquit, including Perkins Cove and Ogunquit Beach.
In addition to the location, the Meadowmere has some great amenities for families, like a game room, indoor and outdoor pools, and a small theater showing movies.
We recommend booking a family suite, which includes two separate rooms. These are great because the kids have their own sleeping area, but you are all still in the same guest room.
You can reserve a stay here.
Red Jacket Beach Resort, South Yarmouth, MA
This beautiful oceanfront resort is located in the mid-Cape region of Cape Cod. It’s located right on the gorgeous Yarmouth beach, and also offers an indoor and outdoor pool.
While you are in South Yarmouth, you can also enjoy family activities like bowling, mini golf, batting cages, and more.
Bonus: Margaritaville Resort Cape Cod
Opening in the summer of 2024, in the location of the former Cape Codder Resort, is the Margaritaville Resort Cape Cod. This family-friendly resort will offer 272 guest rooms, the Fins Up! Indoor Water Park, an outdoor pool, and much more. You can find out more information on their website.
